History - 2010
Written on February 1, 2017
The 2010 AGM and Conference in Auckland saw MTNZ mark the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the organisation. Whilst the number of attendees did not quite reach expectation, those who did took the opportunity to attend the informative seminars and forums presented by some of the best and to network/socialise with likeminded musical theatre enthusiasts. The John Herber Masquerade Ball on Saturday evening at SkyCity Grand was a fitting way to celebrate in style with some fantastic costumes on display and some superb entertainment.
Our 50th year of existence was an appropriate time to reflect on what our organisation has achieved over the years and the commemorative booklet published for the celebration 'Gaffer Tape and Greasepaint' certainly highlighted the many milestones. This book was compiled Kate Ghent, Allan and Kay Nagy with assistance from John MacGibbon.
During the combined Zone Four/ Zone Five meeting held in Ashburton in 2009, a shortage of directors in the South Island was identified and it was requested at that meeting that the Executive consider facilitating a training school for budding directors to hopefully bridge the gap.
Following that meeting the Executive asked Kate Ghent, Helen Horsnell - Zone Five Representative and Matt Bentley to prepare an application to Creative New Zealand to seek assistance to enable MTNZ to host this training school we were successful in obtaining a grant.
It was not been a great year for the MTNZ family with those in our membership who were affected by the Canterbury earthquakes and the Pike River disaster on the West Coast. On a positive note Diane Brodie of Showbiz Christchurch and Gillian Davies of Napier Operatic both of whom were recipients of the QSM for their services to musical theatre.
MTNZ Life Membership was awarded to Past President John Antony of North Shore Music Theatre. John has a seen some 50 years of involvement in musical theatre and has achieved a great deal during this time. A Life Member of North Shore Music Theatre, John has far too many 'strings to his bow' to mention for fear of leaving one or more out. His service to MTNZ as Zone Representative, Vice President and President was exemplary and your Executive had no hesitation in awarding John the highest award achievable in our organisation.
The library once a valuable source of income for MTNZ, sadly no longer meets the needs of the membership of today and the Executive are facing a decision as to what to do with a valuable resource that has been built up over many years.
