Through the years...

History - 2011

Written on February 1, 2017

The year has proven to be a very busy and highly successful one for our organisation. Our AGM and Conference in Nelson was an outstanding success, attendance numbers met our expectations and the accommodation and meeting facilities were superb.

Once again those who attended took the opportunity to participate in the informative seminars and forums presented by some of the best presenters available and also soaked up the networking opportunities. The ball on Saturday evening at WOW Museum was a great occasion and many did it in style with some fantastic and innovative costumes matching those of the Wearable Art Award winners on display at the venue.

We must also say thank you to those who came to the rescue by assisting with setup of AV, Sound and Lighting at the Monaco on the Friday night when our sound and lighting sponsors (BOUNCE NZ and the Light Site) were called upon to assist with the memorial service for Christchurch February earthquake. Many thanks to Andrew Comrie, Allan Nagy, John Spelman, Craig Maxwell and ML Consultants for stepping in.

Our special thanks go to John Herber Limited and NZ Fire Shield Limited, our major sponsors, who have most generously renewed their sponsorship for a further three year term. This support received from Graeme, Diane and their family enables MTNZ to operate under a lot less financial pressure and allows us to undertake some projects that otherwise could not possibly be considered.

During the year we ran an extremely successful Directors Course in Dunedin Participants came from all over NZ - from Whangarei to Invercargill. The course is intended as an introduction to Directing Musicals (hence the name!) and is most suitable for those who have never directed at all. It concentrates on relationships, basic stage craft, administration (rehearsal schedules etc) and how to communicate to other departments of a show. Huge thanks to Musical Theatre Dunedin for hosting the school and David Adkins who was the course tutor.

MTNZ Past President John Antony of North Shore, Susan Page of Napier Operatic, and Bob Cater, Porirua were all worthy recipients of the Queens Service Medal during 2011 for their services to theatre and the community.

MTNZ acknowledge and thank most sincerely Ella Duddridge who was the MTNZ secretary from 1964 - 1983 and was made a life member in 1986 (known as Vice Patron then). Ella's contribution to the early days of the New Zealand Federation of Operatic Societies was enormous and she was a true pioneer of our organisation.

We fare welled Delwyn Smith, Zone One Representative who stood down from the Executive. Our 'Dellie' will be sorely missed by musical theatre both at a regional and national level; her contribution over a good number of years has been greatly appreciated by us all. We welcomed Kevin Maddern onto the MTNZ Executive as Zone One rep.

We had the combined North Island meeting in Napier over the weekend of 8/9/10 July which saw 100 people attending the events over the weekend. Attendees came from Auckland - Wellington with Terry Molloy from White Audio and Glen Ruske from BOUNCE NZ coming all the way from Christchurch, which was awesome. Huge thanks to Napier Operatic for organising all the logistics and catering for the weekend. Theatre Hawkes Bay were fantastic hosts on Saturday night as well, with a special meal put on at their rooms before we saw West Side Story the Hastings Opera House. Big thanks to Lionel Priest and the team from Theatre Hawkes Bay for all their work. Rick Behague from Aon Insurance presented to the meeting on insurance and how it can affect your society and we also had the President of EVANZ Dale Henderson lead discussion on small venue maintenance. It was a great weekend and the Executive have agreed to hold another one in September 2012 in New Plymouth. The Combined South Island meeting was hosted by the Waimate Theatre Company on Saturday 13 August. It is really great for both Ian and I, to get out and about and meet with the membership in a less informal environment than annual AGM weekend and catch up with everyone and share ideas etc. Huge thanks to Stuart Hendricks from Hal Leonard Australia who came from Melbourne to Waimate and our major sponsors - John Herber for attending along with other corporate members, Light Site, ML Consultants with special thanks to Graeme and David for leading discussion at the Waimate meeting on small venue maintenance. Special thanks to the Waimate team for their outstanding hospitality and catering. The next Combined South Island meeting will be September 2012 in Timaru.
