Radio Mics - are yours legal?

Written on December 14, 2016

As communicated previously by MTNZ, the law is changing with regard to the frequencies available for Radio Mics. At the recent ETNZ (Technicians) Conference, an update was provided by the Wireless Users NZ Group ( that has been advocating our views/needs to the Government.

Whilst nothing is absolutely set in stone yet, it is reasonably clear that if you have mics operating above 703 MHz then you will not be able to use them after 11 March 2015 as this will be ILLEGAL. This is not an issue that will go away (as I am sure many societies have been hoping).

Why is this happening? By utilising digital technology, the government is rolling out digital Freeview TV, which makes a more efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum. The frequency bands that become available through this efficiency will be sold off to mobile broadband suppliers for many Millions of dollars. The frequencies we use for Radio Mics "fit around" the frequencies used for Television. As the frequencies for Television are changing, it follows that the frequencies we can use for Radio Mics also change.

Below is a graphical representation of the current situation, and the Future radio mic band (Blue). Please ensure your technical people check your equipment to ensure it complies (ie it is in the "blue" bands, and is not above 703 MHz).

Note : If you use frequencies that are allocated to mobile broadband suppliers after 11 March 2015 and affect their service, then you can expect a visit from someone very official that will not be pleasant.
