He Kākano - Junior Theatre Festival NZ Pilot Programme

Nurturing the next generation of theatre-makers

8–12 March 2027 | Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand

What if you could help bring a brand-new Broadway JR. musical to life before it’s even released?

He Kākano is an exciting five-day musical theatre experience for young performers, bringing together emerging talent and recognised industry professionals to explore, develop and workshop a new Broadway JR. musical.

Delivered in collaboration with Junior Theatre Festival New Zealand (JTFNZ), with support from MTI Australasia, He Kākano gives young theatre-makers a unique opportunity to be part of the creative process, develop their skills and discover what it takes to bring a musical from the page to the stage.

Designed for young people aged 10–18, the programme combines professional guidance, practical workshops and collaborative creativity in a supportive environment where young performers can learn, grow and make lasting connections.

And it all leads to a special presentation of their work at the Musical Theatre New Zealand National Training Weekend on Friday afternoon, sharing what they’ve developed with MTNZ conference delegates and family members.

A week of creativity, collaboration and discovery

Working alongside three industry-recognised professionals, participants will explore a new Broadway JR. musical through a hands-on workshop process.

Across five days, they’ll have the opportunity to:

Develop their acting, singing and movement skills

Explore musical theatre repertoire and storytelling

Work collaboratively with other young performers

Learn directly from experienced industry professionals

Experience the creative process behind a new musical

Build confidence, creativity and performance skills

Form friendships with other passionate young theatre-makers from across Aotearoa

Every day brings new opportunities to experiment, contribute ideas and grow as a performer.

Who is He Kākano for?

He Kākano is designed for young people aged 10–18 who love musical theatre and want to develop their skills in a collaborative, encouraging environment.

Whether they love singing, acting, dancing or discovering how all the elements of a musical come together, participants will be encouraged to explore their creativity, challenge themselves and contribute to a shared artistic experience.
