What is the MTNZ Big Theatre Open Weekend?
The Big Theatre Open Weekend was born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, as MTNZ sought ways to support reconnection, re-engagement with communities, and to kick-start community theatre across Aotearoa.
Each year, theatre groups throughout New Zealand invite their local communities into their spaces – to connect, explore, and get involved.
As the national body, MTNZ promotes the weekend across the wider theatre community, while participating groups lead the charge locally with their own events and invitations.
From open rehearsals, backstage tours, wardrobe show-and-tells, afternoon teas, to hair and make-up tutorials – every event is an opportunity to showcase the heart of community theatre.
So this 26–28 September 2025, we encourage you to throw open your doors for the Big Theatre Open Weekend. Because sometimes, all your next volunteer, supporter, or audience member needs – is an invite.
